Vedic Astrology divides the zodiac signs and associated houses (Bhavas) into four elements - Fire, Earth, Air and Water.
Element signifies the basic nature or temperament of a Sign, and their manner of expression.
Fire - High Energy, explosive, passionate, enthusiastic, impulsive, courageous, confident, impatient.
Earth - Rational, realist, practical, traditional, Down-to-earth, cautious, reliable.
Air - Detached, curious, social, distant, unemotional, aloof, unstable.
Water - Emotional, private, moody, psychic, spiritual, mystic, compassionate.
Considering these traits, you can easily analyze of how two individuals will gel together. Relationships could be easily deciphered from the dominant sign in ones horoscope. Ruling sign of Lagna and Moon determines the prominent traits on an individual.
Water and earth co-exist on mother Earth, in the form of a mixture; similarly then can co-exist in relationships. Water and fire have hard time co-existing and normally are against each other. It is seen that natives having earthy & water signs gel well together and those having air and fire signs party together.
In general water and fire; earth and fire and water and air signs are unfriendly to each other.
Similar concept goes with planet and sign placement in houses, as the unfriendliness reduces the strength of the house whereas presence of a friendly sign or planet enhances the strength of the house.
