Divisional Charts - Vargas

Each sign signifies certain aspect in the horoscope. Finer analysis of these aspects is accomplished by analyzing related Divisional Charts or Vargas. Varga is 'division' in Sanskrit and extensively used in Jyotish for a deeper analysis.

There are 16 vargas in Parashara Hora Shastra and few additional in Jamini Sutra. Each varga is a specific sub-division of zodiac sign of 30 degree, and represents specific aspect of the horoscope. The name of the varga signifies number of sub-divisions. Please refer table below for further details.

Important points to consider when analyzing Divisional charts -

- D-1 or Rashi chart, the main chart or horoscope without any sub-divisions, needs to be included while analyzing any divisional chart. Divisional Charts are never analyzed in stand-alone mode; they are always studied with the Rashi or main chart D-1.

- Accurate  birth time is the first requirement, else divisional charts will point you in wrong direction. Position changes every two minutes in most of divisional charts, so if birth chart is off by more than two minutes, go no further than Dasha-vargas.

- Conclusions should be drawn only for the specific aspect of the divisional chart like you cannot analyze children to Dasamsha.

- Navamsha is second most important divisional chart after rashi chart and due importance should be given to it. Even an exalted planet in rashi chart but debilitated in navamsha will not give its promised results during the dasha periods; on other hand debilitated planet in rashi chart but exalted in navamsha will bestow good results, after initial struggle.

- Strength of planets in rashi chart is of prime importance, but the effects can vary during the dasha based on its placement in divisional chart.

- Lord of ascendant for the divisional chart should always be included in the analysis.

- Planets positioned in trines in divisional charts tend to give benefic results during the periods, and opposite is true when placed in Dusthana.

- Vargottam planets gain strength depending on the number of divisional charts its positioned in same rashi.
